![]() Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.Picking up where the season 2 finale left off, season 3 finds the beloved Pogues having escaped that freighter fight with Ward Cameron for the shores of a deserted island that JJ has dubbed "Poguelandia." This picturesque, coconut-filled paradise was filmed on Bathsheba Beach in Barbados, whose famous rock formations can clearly be seen in the season premiere. But I guess we are just going full Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider here with this gang now.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. It’s mentioned as part of their epic list of discoveries but that gold is.still sitting in the Cameron vault, last we checked? Is that Rafe’s? Sara’s? The show was content to ignore that question all season, focused instead on the cross and El Dorado.Ī bizarre ending, if you ask me, and one that should have ended the series, rather than starting some new, entirely unrelated questline going forward. There’s also the matter of the Merchant Gold, which is unresolved. The gang is now treasure hunters for hire, though I don’t really understand how this doesn’t change the core DNA of the series, which is supposed to be based in OBX itself. So that’s the plan going forward, it seems. Their newly minted reputation as treasure hunters has them be approached by an old man with an older manuscript that appears to be tracking Blackbeard’s ship, and no doubt some manner of lost treasure. But they got famous, at least, which comes with its own level of perks.Īs I was watching this unfold, I kept thinking to myself “how is this not the series finale? how are you going to try to top the discovery of El Dorado?” Then, the show came up with an answer. Both their fathers die during this process, but then the show skips ahead 18 months where somehow, the gang has at least gotten credit for the discovery, though I would imagine you do not get to keep the giant mountain of gold sitting under a country that is not yours which you also entered illegally. Valuable but.an odd take on El Dorado, to be sure. Update: If you want to get into spoiler territory, we can talk about the ending a little bit, which poses a different sort of problem.Įventually, yes, John B and Sara do in fact discover El Dorado, which is less of a city and more of a giant underground gold mine with a central, massive pillar made of gold. ![]() I really hope season 4 can turn things around here, and this series really needs and endgame in mind. I guess you could describe this as a “for the fans” scenario, but I’m not sure how fans of these characters could enjoy what they’re being put through in this tortuous new season. Audience scores appear to be about the same as last season, but the few critic scores that are in have made it drop sharply, though we’re in a weird situation where only four critics total appear to have watched the #1 series in America right now. We will see what critics and audiences make of it. It feels like Outer Banks has no real plan going forward, and I’m frankly shocked that it was renewed for season 4 if that was based on some Netflix executive doing an early screening of season 3. It’s a bad season of a show that at least used to be better than this. Old villain Ward Cameron has been neutered and replaced by a less interesting Carlos Singh and his giant band of mercenaries essentially turning this into an Uncharted game. Treasure quests are once again thwarted by the Camerons for the millionth time. ![]() ![]() Relationships are fractured for impossibly stupid reasons. The rest of the show is drama for its own sake, and it’s getting frankly a little exhausting that the series refuses to let its cast members ever, ever win for more than two seconds. ![]()
